Irish Ferries fit power terminals for electric cars in their ships

We don't exactly have many electric cars quietly humming their way around our streets, but those that are ther can now charge up while crossing the Irish Sea.

Electric and hybrid car travel between Ireland, Britain and France has been given a boost  after Irish Ferries and ESB ecars have worked together to put battery charging docks on two for their ferries.

So far, charging points have been fitted on Ulysses, their giant Dublin to Holyhead cruise ferry, and on Oscar Wilde, the cruise ferry used to transport passengers between Rosslare and the two French ports of Cherbourg and Roscoff. "The move extends the horizon for electric and hybrid car drivers who can, in future, recharge their batteries in more ways than one as they sail into and out of Ireland," said Daragh O'Reilly, marketing manager of Irish Ferries.

The charging service is free of charge.

Although only two of Irish Ferries' four ships are currently fitted with charging points, the plan is to extend the service to their other two vessels: the Jonathan Swift fast ferry that serves the route between Dublin and Holyhead in north Wales and the Isle of Inishmoe cruise ferry used between Rosslare and Pembroke in south Wales.

A number of car manufacturers are in the process of launching electric cars in Ireland, including Nissan (the Nissan Leaf) and Renault (the ZE range).

Irish Ferries to Offer POD Point EV Charging: WWW.EVWORLD.COM

POD Point, the UK’s fastest growing provider of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure together with ESB ecars and Irish Ferries is
pleased to announce the launch of POD Points onboard the Dublin?Holyhead and Rosslare?Cherbourg /Roscoff routes. This is an important
development for EV drivers who can now travel to Britain and France with their electric vehicle or hybrid car.

The charge points chosen by ESB are POD Point Workplace units, which offer the latest Mode 3 charging technology and are the charge
point of choice for new electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf. The POD Points can charge up to 2.5 times faster than by plugging in to a
conventional socket, giving EV drivers a significant boost during the crossing.

POD Point also offer advanced features which may appear in future installations, such as GPRS communications. This will enable the Irish
Ferries to view live online reports of usage; this will provide valuable data on how popular the charge points are and the total energy used
– and CO2 saved – by customers using the points. At the moment these charge points are free to use, but in future if Irish Ferries decide to
charge for the energy, features such as RFID card technology (similar to an Oyster card) or SIM card payment can be used. In order to
guarantee that EV drivers can charge their vehicle at this free of charge service during the crossing, POD Points are now installed in a
dedicated electric vehicle charging area aboard the Ulysses and Oscar Wilde Irish Ferries’ vessels. Both POD Point and ESB hope to extend
this service to their rest of the fleet.

Irish Ferries’ are said to be at the forefront in embracing new technology and facilities and we at POD Point could not agree more. Daragh
O'Reilly, Marketing Manager at ESB ecars said the first launch of charging points on Irish Ferries “extends the horizon for electric car and
hybrid motorists who can now recharge their electric car as they travel into and out of Ireland."

Speaking at the launch, Paul Mulvaney, Managing Director ESB ecars said; "As part of the rollout of electric car charge points, this new
development of onboard charging extends the infrastructure to enable electric car drivers to travel to foreign destinations.
