Developing good leaders

At Southwestern we have a lofty vision of developing students into responsible citizens, students capable of leading “through service in a world without boundaries.” The thing about developing citizen leaders, though, is that it cannot happen in an institutional vacuum.  Southwestern is incapable of helping students become engaged community members on its own. Faculty can teach inspirational lessons on the dire importance of social responsibility. Campus organizations can give students opportunities to practice leadership in a school setting. Nevertheless, if Southwestern attempts to develop young people capable of changing the world solely by itself, the institution will fail. The work of turning students into citizens is the responsibility of the community as a whole. We have all heard the old saying that it takes a village to raise a child. In order to prepare students who are well-equipped to confront community challenges and dream up solutions to the most pressing problems, a coordinated approach that includes both teaching and real-world training is needed. Community partnerships are at the heart of this challenge. Brave pioneers have entered into campus-community partnerships with the college and have worked towards authentic collaboration. The college’s three service learning programs — Leadership, Discipleship, and Green Team — utilize service as a tool to create change, and each of these groups relies on the involvement of community partners to make this happen. For example, the Leadership program’s Freshman Work Day project, which involves more than 200 college students and 25 community members working throughout Winfield to paint homes and complete yard work, would not have succeeded this year without the expertise, participation, and financial funds provided by the local Elks chapter. Discipleship’s ongoing partnership with local churches connects congregation members with students eager to meet their household needs. Likewise, the Green Team’s collaboration with the City of Winfield Recycling Center aided in the collection of over 63,000 pounds of recyclable materials on campus last school year, thus preventing all of that waste from being dumped into local landfills. Community partners are central to developing our students and helping us accomplish our missions. The great thing about community partnerships is that everybody wins.
