The loss of HMS Hood

Seventy years ago on Tuesday May 24, one of the greatest disasters to befall the Royal Navy during World War Two occurred. This was the sinking of HMS Hood by the German battleship Bismarck. This had special significance for our area because two out the only three survivors from 1,418 officers and men had connections with Teesside. Ted Briggs, who was born and lived in Redcar and Bob Tilburn who moved to Teesside after the war.

A photograph showing just a portion of the 1,418 crew who manned HMS Hood giving a graphic indication of the huge loss of life. This photograph was kindly submitted by retired Evening Gazette picture editor Dave Jamieson. It shows the crew of HMS Hood a few years before the war while the ship was based at Malta, Dave's grand father Michael Hart was serving on the ship and is somewhere in this picture, he left HMS Hood before the war began. The sheer scale of the calamity is difficult for us to comprehend when so many servicemen lose their lives in an instant. A photograph kindly submitted by David Jamieson, retired Evening Gazette picture editor, gives us some idea. Dave's grandfather served on HMS Hood before the war and while they were at Malta a large section of the crew assembled on the battlecruiser's forecastle around the main armament for a photograph. Not all of these men would have been serving on HMS Hood at the time of its destruction but it gives us a graphic illustration of the number of lives that were lost in a matter of minutes.

The history of the Battle of the Denmark Strait, the engagement with the battleship Bismarck on May 24, 1941 is well documented. The British battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Hood were despatched to intercept the German battleship Bismarck and heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen before they could reach the Atlantic convoy routes. The intention of the German squadron was never to engage with heavy units of the Royal Navy but to attack merchant shipping on its way from America and Canada.

However, on the fateful day the Germans found that their plan had been discovered and they were facing two of the most powerful units in the British navy. On paper the British ships certainly had the advantage, HMS Prince of Wales was newer than the Bismarck and although armed with 14 inch guns compared with Bismarck's 15 inch she carried ten of these to Bismarck's eight. Equally she was heavily armoured and was designed to withstand shells of Bismarck's calibre. HMS Hood carried eight 15 inch guns weighed 42,000 tons and was far more powerful than the Prinz Eugen, at 18,000 tons and carrying eight 8 inch guns.

This photograph appeared in “The Field” November 27th 1920.

The Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VIII, often stayed at Pitsford Hall during the hunting season. Captain George Drummond was his mentor with regards to hunting and also buying and stabling horses for him.

In 1995 three letters from the Prince to Drummond (c.1920-21) were auctioned and although I have not been able to find out any details of either vendor of buyer, the item descrition included this snippet from one of the letters:

“…If by any chance announcement has not been made by the time you get this please keep information very secret only please carry on buying horses.
