2 Japanese kill selves in Elbert County woods
The man and woman left detailed notes that explained their family lost their home in the March 11 catastrophe that killed more than 15,000 people, according to Maj. David Cleveland, chief investigator for the Elbert County Sheriff's Office.
The notes didn't indicate if they had lost any loved ones, however, he said.
"It's a sad story," Cleveland said. "The poor people of Japan had such a devastating loss that had repercussions on these two people."
The 47-year-old man called 911 about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and told a dispatcher that his wife had committed suicide and he was planning to do the same. He didn't tell the dispatchers where he was, but warned that he would shoot at any law officers who approached, Cleveland said.
Elbert County deputies tracked a cell phone signal to the general area where the call was made, and officers in a Georgia State Patrol helicopter spotted the bodies in a makeshift campsite in some woods off Georgia Highway 17, northwest of Elberton.
It appeared the man and woman had made a clearing in the woods for the sole purpose of killing themselves, according to Cleveland, who called the site "very orderly."
Though officers found a gun with the bodies, Cleveland would not say how the man and woman killed themselves. He might release more information after autopsy results are back from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's crime lab, he said.
The man had said something to the dispatcher that made authorities concerned the suicide site was dangerous for officers, so they didn't move in until the Athens-Clarke Fire Department's hazardous materials unit arrived to make sure the area was safe, Cleveland said.
He would not describe the potential threat.
The man and woman didn't leave a suicide note, Cleveland said, but investigators found detailed instructions - written in English - that described "what they'd like to be done after they were gone."
He would not elaborate.
The couple also killed a cat they had with them.
The man identified the 44-year-old woman as his wife in the 911 call, but they did not have the same last names in their passports, Cleveland said.
Officials with the Japanese consulate in Atlanta are working with state and local authorities to identify the couple and determine how they ended up in Northeast Georgia, Cleveland said.
Date stamps in the passports show they came to this country from Japan after the earthquake and tsunami, he said.
