iPhone 5 catch 22: five reasons Verizon not an option for iPhone users

The iPhone 5 is coming this year despite last week’s no-show, and that places longtime iPhone users in the catch-22 of wanting to jump from AT&T to Verizon for their next iPhone but not necessarily being able to, for a variety of reasons. While Verizon is widely considered to offer at least marginally better network performance, that doesn’t mean it’s the right fit for you and your iPhone. Here are five reasons why existing AT&T iPhone users may not be able to jump to the Verizon iPhone 5, or should think twice before doing so.

Data : Those who’ve had an iPhone for a few years with AT&T still have unlimited data plans for $30 per month unless they’ve downgraded to a cheaper limited plan. For those who do a good amount of internet, email, app and song downloads, and other data-sucking activities on their iPhone while away from wifi, nervously tracking how much data they use each month and attempting to avoid overage charges is not a fun spectator sport. As such, they won’t leave AT&T unless another carrier offers unlimited data to new users. Verizon did offer that to early Verizon iPhone 4 adopters, but not coincidentally, Verizon is set to kill that option off before the iPhone 5 arrives. That leaves those iPhone users who need unlimited data married to AT&T whether they want to or not.

Talk and surf : As AT&T has bragged about in its TV ads, the AT&T iPhone allow you to use the internet while talking on the phone. As of right now Verizon does not allow such usage. If that doesn’t change with the Verizon iPhone 5, it’s another reason why existing AT&T iPhone users might need to stand pat with their carrier.

4G uncertainty : Verizon is currently ahead of AT&T in the 4G LTE race, but that’s like saying that the turtle is ahead of the other turtle. If the iPhone 5 ends up being a 4G LTE device and you end up being in a place where AT&T 4G LTE arrives before Verizon 4G LTE, you might need to stick with AT&T if you want to take advantage of it. That said, it’s more likely that Verizon 4G LTE will reach you first. Just don’t hold your breath either way in the mean time.

Timing : Many or most of those who bought an AT&T iPhone 4 a year ago should be eligible for upgrade pricing by the time the iPhone 5 arrives (meaning you can buy it at the advertised price instead of paying $200 or more above sticker). But that doesn’t mean you’re free to leave the carrier altogether, as the contract runs two years from your last phone purchase. The only iPhone users who can currently walk from AT&T without paying an early termination fee are those who bought their last iPhone in mid 2009 or earlier. And buying the iPhone 5 means you won’t be able to get out of AT&T until late 2013.
