USA punctures Lagos dominance of Access Bank Charity Polo

Visiting Work to Ride team from the United State of America, (USA) put a halt to Lagos clean sweep of the four major prizes at stake at this year’s Access Bank Emir of Katsina Charity Shield Polo Tournament which came to a climax in Kaduna on Sunday.

The Americans who are household names among Nigerian polo enthusiasts added another trophy to their over crowded title shelf, beating the American University of Yola 71/2-6 in a hotly contested final game to win their fourth UNICEF Cup title in the internationally acclaimed Access Bank Charity event.

That hard earned victory by the Work to Ride team that also produced the UNICEF Most Valuable Player (MVP) in their top striker, Julie, present some kind of checkmate to the top firing Lagos teams that have already clinched two out of the four major titles and are in line to win the event’s biggest prize, the Charity Shield.

The UNICEF Cup final that preceded the Charity Shield semi final game pitting two arch rivals from Lagos, witnessed by a capacity crowd of polo aficionados, with the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ewerenmadu as the Special Guest of Honour.

Senator Ewerenmadu who has been part of the charity event for the past three years, presented the UNICEF Cup to the winners and the runners-up, AUN Polo team, urging them not to let the final result deter them from their pursuit for sporting excellence.

The Special Guest of Honour who singled out the Access Bank Charity event as a unique project aimed at alleviating the condition of the under privileged in the society, thumbs up the sole sponsors, Access Bank and its partners, UNICEF and host Fifth Chukker for a job well-done.
