Rare medal illustrates courage at Marne

The Rock of the Marne isn’t a place or an object, as it may sound, it’s actually a group of American soldiers who fought at the Marne River during the Second Battle of the Marne in World War I.

The battle lasted from July 15 to Aug. 5 in 1918 and while others retreated, the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division stood its ground during the last German offensive to take over Western Europe. The division remained on the front line and faced German attack while French and British allies retreated.

The allies held off the German’s advance and suffered 120,000 casualties, but the Germans’ casualties were estimated at 168,000.

The medal was awarded to Private Roy R. Reynolds of Paola who was a part of the Rock of the Marne in the 3rd Division, 38th Mechanized Infantry Division. The medal was issued by Veterans of Foreign Wars to veterans of the 38th Mechanized Infantry Regiment. No other unit has been issued its own VFW medal, and only 3,000 soldiers were eligible to receive the Rock of the Marne medal.

Reynolds lived in the Paola and Hillsdale area for 56 years and was married to Elsie Irene Welch. He owned and operated a garage, and later Reynolds Radio and TV with his son. He passed away in 1977.
