Experts say watch labels when choosing energy bars
NUTRITION ON THE RUNHaving one of those days when a nutrition bar is the easiest thing to grab? Here are some things ShopSmart recommends keeping an eye out for:
Low calories: Women should look for bars ranging from 150 to 200 calories; men should limit themselves to 250 to 400 calories per bar.
Low fat: Look for something with 5 or fewer grams of fat.
High fiber: Aim for at least 3 grams.
Vitamins: If you’re already taking a multivitamin or eating fortified foods, watch out for bars with extra vitamins and minerals to avoid exceeding 100 percent of the daily value.
But just because you pick them up in the health food aisle doesn’t mean energy bars are the best choice for your health.
A story in the June issue of ShopSmart magazine, from the publishers of Consumer Reports, reveals many are high in fat, calories and sodium.
With the sale of energy and nutrition bars up 52 percent since 2005, ShopSmart Senior Editor Jody Rohlena said it made sense to take a peek at what’s going on under the foil.
“People are eating them, and we thought, ‘Let’s figure out what’s really in them. Are they a good choice? What can you look for to make a good choice? Is it really so different from eating a candy bar?’ ”
So ShopSmart staff made a list of top-selling bars, divided them into groups including sports energy bars, meal-replacement bars and nutrition bars and created tables for at-a-glance comparisons of calories, fat, sodium, protein, carbs and sugars.
The objective, Rohlena said, wasn’t to come up with a top-picks list, as Consumer Reports and ShopSmart do for other products. Rather, the point was to educate readers on picking the right bar for their individual needs.
“If you’re really working out, you might want one of the bars that are marketed to athletes. … If you’re sitting at your desk and you’re looking for an afternoon snack, you’ll want to look for a lower-calorie bar,” Rohlena said.
Judy Arnet, a registered dietitian and clinical nutrition manager at Boone Hospital Center, said energy bars aren’t inherently bad.
“They’re OK for an occasional use, but it’s much better to get your calories and nutrients from real food,” Arnet said.
Part of the problem with energy bars, Arnet said, is they weren’t originally intended to be consumed as snacks.

And though their convenience is part of the appeal of energy and nutrition bars, “there are lots of quick, easy-to-grab foods. Real foods,” Arnet said. One of her favorite standbys is Carnation Instant Breakfast blended with nonfat milk.
