A Prouve House and Naughty Porcelain Divert Collectors at Design Miami/Basel
BASEL—The expanded and much improved Design Miami/Basel fair in Halle 5 of the Messe Basle complex resembled a construction site/performance piece as three young men in black t-shirts and jeans assembled and deconstructed Jean Prouvé 's 20-by-20-foot Pavillon Demontable house at the entrance of the fair.Staged by Paris's Galerie Patrick Seguin , the strictly scheduled construction of Prouvé's decidedly proletarian house from 1944 — back when France was in ruins — comes unassembled in ten museum crates and is available for £600,000 ($969,000). Seguin is also offering six other Prouvé structures dating from 1945-1970 at prices ranging from £800,000 ($1,292,000) to three million Euros ($4.3 million).
"It's not exactly Peter Marino ," jested Seguin, referring to the noted decorator, "we're not into decoration." Though Seguin had yet to sell the spartan Pavillon Demontable, he sold a Prouvé dining table in wood and metal, "Salle a Manger" from the 1940s for €140,000 ($199,000) to an American collector and two stools by Pierre Jeanneret for €10,000 ($14,200) each to a South American collector.
The dealer, in association with fellow Parisian exhibitor Galerie Jacques Lacoste , sold a vintage Jean Royere suite from 1958, comprised of a fluffy "Polar Bear" ("Ours Polaire") sofa sheathed in its original lime green fabric, an armchair, and a matching poof (a kind of fuzzy ottoman) to an American collector for €750,000 ($1,064,000). The group purchase also included a Royere "Sphere" table with a travertine top.
The Royere works were installed in La Coste's stand directly across from the Seguin construction site that was also cleverly bordered by a wraparound vitrine of Prouvé documents pertaining to his remarkable, prefab structures. Seguin, who has steadily championed Prouvé and the French stars Charlotte Perriand , Pierre Jeanneret , and Le Corbusier , revealed he would stage and build five of the Prouvé portable houses at Gagosian in Paris this spring.
