Maltese dog found buried alive and shot 40 times on the mend

In the tiny nation of Malta, a once stray, five-year-old collie, sheep dog mix is making an impression across the world. Found on May 19 whimpering in pain with her snout and legs tied, the survivor canine managed to kick herself to the surface of the shallow grave her abusers left her in to die.

And just ten days later, Star, as her rescuers have named her, is making a miraculous recovery. Her veterinarian Trevor Zammit who painstakingly picked the shotgun pellets out of Star's head without the benefit of anesthetic because Zammit feared the dog was too weak, wags her tail whenever her rescuer comes into view.

Star was found quite by accident when investigators were in the area on another case. Animal Welfare personnel heard her faint whimperings at Ghar Flasan and took her to Tai Qali where Star has been treated and is already excited when it is time for her to go for walks.

Star's new owners call everyday and visit; her rehabilitation is planned to take another three weeks when at that time she will be able to go home. The dog still needs a skin graft behind her head from the gaping wound where the gunshot pellets were removed.

And despite the harrowing, egregious experience this dog endured, Star still nuzzles all of her human caretakers.

Star's Facebook page entitled Star: the dog who lived has over 24,378 people following her life now and using the experience as an example of bringing more awareness to animal cruelty, pet adoption, and rescue.

Over 50 people originally came forward asking to adopt Star, and this is another opportunity to remind anyone interested in adopting, that 110 other dogs at the same rescue where Star is recuperating also need homes. Please email animalwelfare.mrra@gov.mt   or go to your own area animal shelter and offer another dog, just like Star that may have had a bad experience a new and forever home.
