CdMHS Students Collecting Sports Gear For African Village
Corona del Mar High School students are collecting outgrown sports jerseys, unused equipment and gently used cleats for children in the African village of Malawi.
The Just for Kicks Clubs will be collecting items through Friday with donation boxes outside room 504 at the school.
“Their mission is to collect gently used sports equipment and donate them to underprivileged children,” according to a PTA email blast. “In the past two years, they have collected over 1100 items – balls, cleats, uniforms/jerseys/shorts, sports backpacks/duffel bags, tennis racquets, lacrosse sticks, tricycles and more.”
The club donated the items through a local church to children in the village of Rojo Gomez in Mexico. This year, the club has partnered with Direct Connection to Africa to distributed items in Malawi.

Following in the footsteps of his father Kurt Freyberger, who played tennis for Western Kentucky University, Drew, who will be a senior at Highlands High School in the fall, has a passion for the sport.
It was this passion that led Drew to start his own charity to help others enjoy the sport.
“I read about a runner who started a program where he collected old running shoes to give to charity,” Drew said. “I thought it sounded great and decided to put my own twist on it and collect used tennis rackets.”
This idea led to the creation of Swing it Again, a charity Drew created to collect and fix up used rackets, which are then given to the Inner City Tennis Project in Mount Auburn.
The project offers inexpensive and free tennis clinics to children, regardless of their ability to pay.
Since he began the project about six months ago, Drew has collected 26 rackets by making fliers and contacting local tennis leagues.
Once the rackets are collected, Drew re-strings them and puts new handle grips on them.
“A slightly used tennis racket with fresh strings is much better than a cheap racket,” Drew said. “Most of my rackets were donated from tennis players in the community who keep up-to-date on the latest equipment and no longer use their racket from a few years ago.”
Kurt said it’s great to see the Inner City Tennis Project giving children a chance to play tennis who may not have been able to otherwise.
“I’m happy Drew has found a way to help this worthy organization,” Kurt said.
Drew’s mother Kay Freyberger said after Drew had to have major back surgery in 2009, she is happy to see where he is today.
“Kurt and I are both so thrilled that not only is he back on the tennis courts competing competitively, but he is reaching out and sharing his love for tennis with others,” Kay said.
Drew said besides collecting the rackets, he will also be volunteering with the project this summer, teaching children some his tennis techniques.
In the future, Drew said he hopes to see his charity continue to grow and possibly be able to pass it down to his brother, who is also a tennis player and will be a freshman at Highlands.
