San Fernando Math Science Technology Magnet School High School Holds Graphing Art Festival.

Who says Math isn't fun? The 4th annual Graphing Arts Festival was held at the San Fernando High School Math Science Technology Magnet, Tuesday, and students had a great time comparing the artwork they successfully recreated by using mathematical equations. At the outdoor event, artwork of every kind was accompanied by a long lists of equations.

Mathematics students selected artwork they found in movies, cartoons, still art, magazines or anything else that they could imagine. Their challenge was to recreate the same image using mathematical formulas. The students calculate formulas to create the image, input the equations into the computer and print the image. The image is compared to the original artwork to see how accurate the student's equations were calculated.

"The various formulas are quite extensive and may number into hundreds, sometimes thousands of possible equations," said San Fernando Magnet Coordinator John Palazzini.

"This year the students had an interesting range of artwork. "It's pretty impressive to see, it's a great event and melds both art and math together and brings together many of the disciplines." said Palazzini.

"It's open to any student in the magnet school, not just our math analysis and calculus students. It's really a popular project. A computer software program reads the formulas that the students come up with and generates the image."

The student who has successfully captured the art image wins. Teachers are the judges and score the projects on accuracy and originality.

"This year the art work was so diverse and creative, students picked art from moves, cartoons, books, we didn't put any limitation on what they could do.

Raudel Hernandez, Arturo Ceja and Jose Polio formed a team to create the Japanese Robot known as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. "We recreated the robot by using linear, parametric and polar equations," Hernandez said. Hernandez said he and his friends selected an image of a Japanese robot because Japanese robots are simply "cool." He plans on studying mechanical engineering and would like to attend MIT, Caltech or Stanford.

Agustin Ibarra selected artwork from Pablo Picasso to calculate. "I picked the "Old Guitarist," it was enjoyable and interesting to do. I enjoy drawing myself." While Ibarra said he enjoys math, he would like to attend UC Irvine and study Art or English.

Working Mom Coupons » Blog Archive » Staying Organized

.  I am always making to-do lists, but then I lose them.  And forget going to the grocery store with a mental list…  Seriously?  It will inevitably be the one item we needed most that gets left out.  I am embarassed to say that I have had my next door neighbor call asking for a cup of sugar, and I walked over empty-handed.  It’s quite sad, really.

Why do you think I make spreadsheets for everything?  Math I can do.  My mind wraps around numbers and formulas and almost thrives on making them all match up in the end.  Math has rules and structure that can’t be bent, unlike my personal life.  The orderly columns and rows, with items all neatly placed into position, gives me some sort of odd comfort because in this little corner of my life I have created some organization where there is usually chaos.

Aside from the obvious high of saving money, I have to confide that part of what thrills me with couponing is making the formulas work to achieve the maximum savings percentage.  It’s a dual win!  Just as in a complex math equation, though, there are several steps to the end result… several elements that have to work together just right to make it happen.

For instance…

The Binder. I at first resisted The Binder.  An accordion file will work just fine, I said.  Properly labeled and jam-packed to the point that the rubber band holding it closed was stretched out of shape and useless, I was determined that it was sufficient.  However, far too many deals missed because I couldn’t find that coupon that I knew was in there somewhere and a couple of times dropping the darn thing and I had to admit that maybe there was something to this binder concept.  I succombed, and of course now wonder how I ever managed before.

For me, much thought went into organizing The Binder in the most efficient way so that it is user-friendly and saves time.  I attempted several methods of filing, including alphabetical by name and alphabetical by type.  The problem with those ideas was that I could find no consistency that made sense, and that went against the grain of my need to have everything stack up nice and neatly.  For instance, where do you put Pillsbury Crescent Rolls coupons?  “P” for Pillsbury?  “C” for Crescent?  Or just “B” for Bread?  My thought was “P”, Pillsbury.  A great idea until I have a Post Raisin Bran coupon, which to me obviously needed to be under “C” for Cereal.  So the whole binder was a contradiction – some items filed under brand name, some by product name, and some by product category.  And where the heck do you file a coupon for $3 off pork WYB charcoal and bread?
