California University Students to Compete in ... - Auto Club Speedway
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (June 14, 2011) – Auto Club Speedway welcomes back collegiate engineering students who will compete in SAE International’s Formula SAE California competition at Auto Club Speedway, June 15 – 18 . The limitations on the car frame and engine will challenge both undergraduate and graduate students who will conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small formula-style racing vehicles against teams from all over the world.
More than 80 universities will compete in this year’s Formula SAE California event, including local universities: California Polytechnic State University; California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; California State University, Fresno; California State University, Fullerton; California State University, Los Angeles; California State University, Sacramento; San Diego State University; San Jose State University; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Davis; University of California, Irvine; University of California, San Diego; University of Southern California and University of California, Merced.
The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. The target marketing group for the race car is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving.
The four-day event allows students to work as a team to skillfully prepare a winning race car. Students will begin the week with tech inspections, moving on to judging and testing, concluding with the coveted award ceremony. Teams have a chance to take home a trophy in one of 11 different categories ranging from The Engineering Design Award to The Fuel Economy Award.
Formula SAE promotes careers and excellence in engineering as it encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management and finances. Formula SAE takes students out of the classroom and allows them to apply textbook theories to real work experiences.
Spectators are welcome and admission is free. For more information about SAE International visit www.sae.org .
