Clerveaux hurdles all

URLINGTON, Vt. — All through the week, Brockton’s Vanessa Clerveaux kept a keen eye on the Weather Channel for the long-term forecast in Burlington, Vt. The state champion in the 100-meter hurdles, Clerveaux didn’t want to be blindsided by unfavorable conditions for the New England Interscholastic Track & Field Championships.

After going down in the finals of the hurdles in last spring’s state meet, Clerveaux made it her personal mission to redeem herself. The state title last Saturday at Bridgewater State University was the first step, and Clerveaux finished exorcising the demons yesterday on the Holland L. Smith Track.

Clerveaux burst out of the blocks and was the first competitor over the first hurdle. From that point on, the race was never in doubt. Clerveaux closed the book on her season in fine fashion, blasting her way to a decisive 14.40 victory. Runner-up Ginny Lavalle of Sanborn Regional (N.H.) clocked a strong 14.71.

Clerveaux was wary of the wet, treacherous conditions, but not intimidated by them. And the Boxers junior wasn’t going to settle for a place or show because of the chilly rain.

“I knew just because it was raining didn’t mean I couldn’t win,” said Clerveaux. “I do think concentrating on your landing on a wet track is very important. I was aware of it. I wasn’t going to come all the way here and take second or third.

“I’m pretty much focused in every meet. I don’t want to have any regrets. I do learn from every meet.”

An hour later, Clerveaux joined teammates Arianna Freeman, Milan Neville and Yvette Igbokwe to take second to a touch to South Burlington (Vt.) in the 4 x 100 relay, clocking a 49.41 to South Burlington’s 49.39.

Massachusetts’ best in the 300 hurdles proved to be the best in New England, as Mansfield’s Jennifer Esposito and Alex Stanton of Medfield broke the long-standing mark from 1985 with times of 42.82 and 42.90, respectively.

Esposito dueled with Stanton last Saturday in the 400 hurdles, and both girls had problems on the last couple of hurdles. Stanton hit the last hurdle but was able to recover for the gold. Esposito hit the final two to take her out of contention for the win.

“After second last week, I focused on this week like it was a different event,” said Esposito. “You run full out (in the 300) the whole time. We all got lucky because the rain stopped just before our race.
