Beatles news briefs: Roy Orbison not jealous of Beatles; fest's McCartney party

INSIDE THREE YEARS OF BEATLES TOURS:  A book concentrating on the six UK tours of The Beatles, released last month in Britain, is now available in the U.S. and Canada.  "Beatlemania! The Real Story Of The Beatles UK Tours 1963-1965," , also available  from Amazon.co.uk , and published by Omnibus Press, examines the early tours through eyewitness accounts. Author Martin Creasy tracked down detailed recollections from musicians and the lone surviving emcee from the tours for their recollections, plus fans, the police, music writers, regional reporters and photographers, cinema staff, technicians and even a hotelier’s daughter who gave up her bed for a Beatle. The book includes Roy Orbison's feelings about them (the Beatles took over the top spot on their tour together). Max, described as "an EMI press guy," talked with the singer and says in the book, "He was a lovely man, Roy Orbison. He was a quiet man and he wasn't the least bit jealous about the reaction the Beatles received. I think he enjoyed it, but he was quite bemused by it all, and he certainly didn't seem bothered about it." 

McCARTNEY BIRTHDAY FEST: Paul McCartney's birthday on June 18 just happens to be the day of this year's Beatles Radio Fest, formerly Beatles Fest West. The event will be held noon to 10:30 p.m. at Lincoln Theater at the Veteran's Home in Yountville, CA., in the Napa Valley. The music begins at 2 p.m. Performers include the Cryers, the Sun Kings, the Return, Neil Tudor from the Macca Band doing a Wings tribute and Christina Trillo, with additional local entertainment by the Napa School of Music. We're told the 2012 show will be timed with Ringo Starr's birthday in July. (Last year's show in San Francisco was during the weekend of John Lennon's birthday.)  RINGO IN GOTHENBURG: Jörgen Isgaard attended Ringo Starr's concert in Gothenburg this past week. He said he hadn't heard Ringo "sing this well in years."  He said he seemed to be in a good mood and chatted quite a bit with the audience. The only problem was a cold wind, to which Ringo commented “It´s bloody freezing and I´d like to put on an overcoat but I can´t!

OK, I've been thinking about this event now for a day. I noticed two what I would consider Steve faux pas. The first being Mr. Jobs brought up the one thing I have been hoping and begging for since the beginning of iTunes and the iTunes store: the Beetles. Why on earth other than "Hey, I like them" would he bring up an artist, in this case a group, that is not even available in the store? Was it a test? Was he hoping to hear a reaction from the audience that would push Sir Paul over the edge and join the throngs of iTunes lovers? Give me a break! The fourth largest music retailer should be able to pull in any band. Fact is, those of us who love them are getting older and the new generation thinks they are six legged arthropods. Along the same lines was the Paramount introduction. Vague to say the least. Now, in the background were titles like the Italian Job (both of them), Paycheck, and K-19. They are not to be seen on the store. Sure, Thursdays seem to be the day of updates for the movies but Steve said they were updating right as he was giving the keynote. Another slip? I wasn't sure what to expect, and wasn't really wishing for anything in particular, so, I thought the Keynote was so-so. Great features on the iPhone, but, why announce it 6 months in advance after so much hype? And why Cingular, possibly the worst phone company on Earth? And why is Yahoo necessary for email? Boy, I bet the contract for this phone will require that you hire a Lawyer with all these corporations providing 3rd party services. YUCKO! No, again, Apple can't stop them from selling the iPad. But it does mean that the iPads TJ Maxx is getting aren't being acquired directly from Apple. It means that they are buying them from a 3rd party. All Apple COULD do is terminate the 3rd party's Apple account (meaning that the 3rd party can no longer purchase directly from Apple) if they want to (if it was a large enough sale to TJ Maxx...80 iPads probably won't matter to Apple). An "Apple approved" retailer is one that has been authorized by Apple to buy Apple products directly from Apple, and thereby get all of the advertising perks, merchandising, etc from Apple.
