Nature vs. Nurture: Conserving Native Plants
We've left our nearly two acres of property mostly to its own devices. Honeysuckle and burning bush have moved in, but there are non-invasive native plants, too. Tea berry, white wood asters, sheep laurel and low-bush blueberries have been here since long before the house was built. Still, there are always surprises.
A red wild lily popped up from the underbrush the first summer after our house was finished. The year of the mystery plants was two years ago: a wild orchid in the front yard and a vine with hot pink flowers by the back step.
Did I have the equivalent of the rare Plymouth gentian found in an industrial park in Hyannis or the colony of endangered purple milkweed at an undisclosed site in Falmouth? Would I present the big find at some horticultural version of Antiques Roadshow? Probably not.
Whatever these mystery plants turned out to be, I knew I'd never find them in catalogs or at the nursery. Maybe they'd turn up in a wildflower guide if I was diligent in my research.
It doesn't need to be said that Nature is the best cultivator. Plantsmen can hybridize, clone and create novelty plants through tissue culture, but behind the bells and whistles is manipulation. There's an unpredictable margin of error. For example, the leaves of the variegated sedum 'Frosty Morn' may revert to green the second year.
The difference between nursery-grown and wild plants has to do with genetics, according to field naturalist Anne Wagner. Wild plants are naturally stronger, yet are more vulnerable to changes in their habitats.
Once an endangered native plant in Massachusetts, the bright orange butterfly weed (Asclepias) is still considered scarce in the wild, yet the plants can be readily found at most nurseries. It's the same for black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) and great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), natives that have become rare in this state.
The cultivated plants are certainly hardy in the area. It's the wild versions that are geared specifically to climate, even to the small area where they grow.
Wagner advocates conservation, specifically "conserving the gene pool." Preserving habitat, seed banking and propagation are some of the ways this goal is accomplished.
