Synan returns for another run at Durham Am

By Steve Wiseman, The Herald-Sun, Durham, N.C.

May 28--DURHAM -- Even before last year's event, the Durham Amateur golf tournament always was going to be special for David Synan.

A Durham native who lived in the Bull City until age 12 when his family moved, Synan fell in love with golf as a youth playing at Hillandale Golf Course, the home of the Durham Amateur, and Croasdaile Country Club.

What occurred a year ago, however, only deepened his affection for Hillandale.

At the 2010 Durham Amateur, Synan fired a 3-under-par 69 to tie for first with Zach Edmondson. The two golfers headed to a playoff, where Synan won his first Durham Amateur championship on the second extra hole.

While he had won junior tournaments and other amateur events in the past, getting the big trophy on one of the courses of his youth was special.

"That was probably my biggest win, that's for sure," the 31-year-old Synan said.

Synan, who coaches men's and women's golf at UNC Pembroke, is back for more beginning today as the Durham Amateur begins its two-day run at Hillandale.

Synan will have plenty of support since he gets to see his extended family while back in town.

"My whole family is in the Triangle," Synan sad. "I love going up there. I stay with family."

The Durham Amateur, which began in 1974, is open to golfers with a 10 handicap or better. The field of 63 tees off this morning on the par-71 layout.

Synan survived the playoff with steady play, carding a pair of pars before winning when Edmondson bogeyed the second playoff hole.

The course design, Synan said, allows for good scores. But care must be taken.

"It's not very long," Synan said. "There are some tight holes, though. You have to keep it in play. There are a lot of birdies out there.

"If you can find your ball, keep it out of the road and out of the ditch, there are a lot of birdies out there. It's a good little golf course."

The Durham Am title was part of a strong year both in his personal game and the coaching profession for Synan. He was named UNC Pembroke's Coach of the Year for the 2010-11 school year after he led the men's and women's teams to NCAA Division II regional berths.

The women's team won the Peach Belt Conference championship, while the men's team placed second in the conference and still earned a chance at postseason play.

This weekend, though, is all about Synan getting a chance to play the game rather that instruct.
