Ticking timebomb of junk food generation
Despite years of healthy eating and fitness initiatives of the government, our children are getting fatter. Karen Wilson addresses the issue of childhood obesity.
Government ministers to the heads of television, the message about healthy eating has been hammered to parents across the country in recent years.
However, children in the North-East one of the worst obesity rates in the country, with one in three 10 to 11 considered overweight or obese.With children able to withdraw from the weigh if they are embarrassed, these figures could be even higher and future costs for the NHS - in terms of treatment of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart, lung and joint problems, not to mention the cost of super-sized equipment such as ambulances, operating tables, beds reinforced chairs and hoists - is often described as a bomb.
Professor Peter Kelly, Acting Regional Director of Public Health in the North East recognizes the region faces a major challenge to get those numbers down.
"Healthcare organizations across the region are working hard to reverse this worrying trend, but we can not do it alone," he said. "We are there for the long term and need the support of parents, caregivers, schools and our partners in public and private sectors to support a positive message about the health and well-being of our younger generations."
While most people agree on the reasons behind the rise of childhood obesity - too much time spent playing computer games, being carried around by car, an increase in convenience foods and takeaway - Opinion is divided on how best to tackle the timebomb growth.
Former Olympic silver medalist Mike McLeod 10 000 m, which won the first two races north, believes that the problem is partly due to laziness and thinks there should be more physical activity and sports at school.
"In the last 10 to 15 years, the approach of people to diet and exercise has changed dramatically," says Mike, 59. "You see young people in the street stuffing junk food and soft drinks."
When it comes to childhood obesity, Mike believes a closer look should be taken on child nutrition and leisure time. "It would be great if the 2012 Olympics could encourage children to take any sport. Local clubs links with schools could help to find our stars of the future. The future impact on the NHS could be enormous if things are left to continue.

Junk food is unhealthy, it has far more sodium and saturated fat, things that clog your arteries and stress of your organs in an attempt to filter the enormous amounts
