Potter knows happiness and contentment

There are art aesthetic, and there are functional art. Janet Burner enjoys a bit of both. Today, the potter, 64, focuses more on the artistic side of his work.

"I head for the more sculptural, away from functional pottery," she said. "There are many potters there doing dishes and bowls."

She loves raku, a term derived from the Chinese character meaning happiness and contentment.

"It's very immediate," she said. "The whole process takes an hour a day report."

After a piece of raku glazing and pulling from a hot oven, burners put in a garbage can with sawdust and paper, where the materials ignited.

The results can be brilliant metallic colors, depth effects and crackling carbon shades of contrasting color.

"Chemically, carbon is attacking the enamel," Burner said, adding that she leaves the room to smoke in the trash for about 15 minutes. "And then you have your results."

Recent work has also rejected Burner, which means "push from the inside out." Many parts are in the forms of naked animals, each it takes about one month to complete.

She works with five types of clay: porcelain, black sand, porcelain, white and brown, and flamewar.

His flamewar - a special clay heat resistant which is used in the creation of pans, plates and other kitchen utensils - makes the kitchen even more of an art.

"Clay can take more heat than metal," said Burns, who still owns a frying pan, she in 1972.

But there are drawbacks.

"He looks like cement," she said. "It is difficult to work with - it cracks."

But people who bought utensils as say food tastes better.

"It cooks slower, more evenly," said Burner, casserole dishes that cost about $ 85, the pans about $ 125.

Entering Burner is comfortable, the house Midtown 630 square feet it shares with his cat, Splashius, you can see her work everywhere - a pan on the stove, sculpture in the living room, a vase on a table.

The native of Tucson recently had moved from its historic home at 326 St. E. Fifth, that housed her and stoneware pottery Sabino, his studio-gallery, since 1985. This house was purchased by developers and recently demolished to make way for a dormitory.

Burner said that the sale was obvious.

"It was either that or I had the choice to live next to a six-story dormitory with 756 students," she says ironically.

Right now, his works can be seen and purchased at Tucson Museum of Art and in galleries in Silver City, New Mexico and Massachusetts, where his mentor, sculptor Harry Holl, put in place.

Problems with Art Clay Silver paper type - help please! - Art ...

I tried to work with Art Clay Silver paper type for the first time yesterday that I wanted to try some models like Origami, but it was a disaster - I lost two sheets with everything I tried, the Paper type split / torn along the folds. I tried a large piece using a whole leaf and small pieces of sheet quarter. Anyone know of a way to avoid this or whether PMC + sheet is easier to use?
