Old Ship sharing its secrets

The hole in the wall has a story to tell. Reveal several layers of construction materials, the history of the hole began in 1681 when workers - to build a church brand new - siding installed on an interior wall, a wall, the corrugated surface 50 years later would be made smooth with the addition of towers carefully cut so that the plaster to be placed on the clapboard give no indication of the original construction. Two decades after the plaster is reinforced with a layer of whitewash, the passage of time eventually would be low for a muddy taupe.

This was one of the discoveries made in recent months by a team of architectural conservators responsible for the restoration and repair of the Old Ship Meeting House so that it can survive for several more centuries.

Other parts of the structure have also given up their secrets - a wall at the rear of the building where a patch of wallpaper designed Victorian complex was revealed, original woodwork on a wall balcony that shows when organ pipes have been temporarily removed. These findings join exterior doors that were discovered during the search for the historical structures, which was done several years ago under the direction of the curator Andrea Gilmore.

Buried for a couple of centuries under the siding that was installed in the pulpit was moved from the wall to the other, the oak planks of heavy doors, studded with nail heads, unharmed by the elements. Once again under the siding, doors will emerge again for viewing in a way where both reveal and protect them.

For people like Andrew Gilmore and craftsmen Ladygo and David Webb, discoveries like this provide valuable insight into the minds and skills of those leaders have long established structural fire and managed to survive the wrecking ball.

"We are fortunate that those who restored the church at different times, decided it would be cheaper to build on the original materials, rather than removing them," Gilmore said one morning at Old Ship, where in the last days of this phase of restoration, the benches were still paper drape, ladders stood at different places, and Andy Ladygo, whose career began in the Museum of Fine Arts restoration of murals, worked close whitewash applied to a wall.

Temporarily relax in one of the benches found while a slight breeze blew through the open windows, Gilmore reflected on what she saw as the greatest challenge of the project.

First Post/ Craftsman Lathe Part needed - Woodworking Talk ...

This is my first post on the site. I live in Austin, Texas, and my primary woodworking activity is turning. I make bowls and cutting boards out of mesquite for family and friends and basically enjoy the activity of it more than anything. I also often make something called a Hawaiian Sling which is a tool for spearfishing, one of my other pastimes. My lathe is an old Craftsman. Model number is 351.21717. She's lived a hard life and is missing the Hex nut originally provided for backing the dead center out of the head stock. Currently I have to beat on anything inserted into the headstock to get it out. Not good. I tried to find the part, but it seems to be discontinued. Is there a way to buy a replacement for this item? I could also just buy a nut and weld a ring on it to serve the same purpose. I'm just not sure of the best way to get such a nut (I should probably be able to figure that out, but any insight is appreciated.)
