Jury listens to interrogation of New London murder case defendant

The jury that will decide if Dashawn J. Revels is guilty of murder began listening Thursday to a recorded interrogation of Revels that took place at New London police headquarters in the hours after the March 31, 2009, shooting death of Bryan Davila.

The state alleges that Revels confessed to shooting Davila during the interrogation, while Revels' attorneys contend that Revels told the police that somebody else did the shooting.

Revels, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y., is accused of fatally shooting Davila near the intersection of Crystal Avenue and State Pier Road. Revels has pleaded not guilty and opted for a trial in New London Superior Court.

New London Detective Richard E. Curcuro described from the witness stand two interviews that took place after Revels, identified by an eyewitness who saw the shooting from her apartment in the Crystal Avenue high-rise, was taken into custody at gunpoint within half an hour of the shooting.

Curcuro said Revels initially denied he was on Crystal Avenue that night. Revels said he spent from "sunup to sundown" with a friend named Leroy Brown on Williams Street, and that he was walking down Hempstead Street, talking on the phone with his girlfriend, when police stopped him.

Curcuro said that when he presented Revels with surveillance photos that showed Revels walking out of 40 Crystal Ave. with six other men, Revels changed his story.

"He stated Bryan Davila pulled out a gun and fired shots," Curcuro testified. "He stated, 'I fired back.' ''

The defense contends that Revels actually said, "We shot back." The jury has started to listen to the recorded interrogation, but that section of the disk is "garbled," according to prosecutor David J. Smith. The jury is to resume listening to the interrogation today, when Curcuro returns to the witness stand.

Also Thursday, Eastern District Major Crime Squad Detective Priscilla Vining described how the crime squad detectives conducted a walk-through of the scene, shot video, took photographs, created a sketch map and seized evidence. At the scene, the detectives seized several items, including Davila's clothing, which had been cut off him while first responders tended to him, a cellphone, a .9mm pistol found near his body and eight spent shell casings found on the ground nearby.

Two shell casings that were recovered from Davila's body during an autopsy also were introduced into evidence. The medical examiner who autopsied Davila is expected to testify when Curcuro is finished. The state hopes to rest its case by Monday, after which the defense will begin calling witnesses.
