Best Nintendo Cameos

Truly, nothing sets a long-time fan's heart alight more than two of their favourite franchises slamming recklessly into one another. Comics, TV and movies have taken incestuous delight in cameos and crossovers for decades, and the games are no stranger to the phenomenon either. Whether it's in the form of a fleeting feel-good wink to the audience or a grand-standing cross-franchise love-in, everybody loves a cameo – and none more so than Nintendo.

Of course, the Super Smash Bros. series has made an art of the video game cameo, but Nintendo characters have been struggling to keep their noses out of other people's business for years. Mario, for instance, has become so adept at moonlighting he's got everything from boxing ref to physician plastered over his CV.

Eagle-eyed gamers could also spot his framed bonce peering out a castle window in 1998's seminal The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – just one of the many sly and not-so-subtle nods that have been made to the Super Mario series over the years. Still, the Zelda games are just the tip of the iceburg when it comes to classic Nintendo cameos - and here, for your reading pleasure, are some of our all-time favourites.


Beyond his original arcade outing in the early 80s, nothing put Donkey Kong on the map like Nintendo's classic Game & Watch games, with the ape making eight different appearances on the handheld series. It only seems fair, then, that Kong should repay the debt somehow, and that's exactly what he did in Donkey Kong Country Returns. Courtesy of developer Retro Studios, system mascot Mr. Game & Watch makes a fleeting cameo in world 7-1. Keep an eye out during Foggy Fumes and you'll see our happy handheld hero hammering away in the background, mere feet away from a VERY familiar stack of girders.


Poor old Tingle. Who can truly comprehend the unbridled loathing the character inspires in West? Perhaps it's his grating demeanor, or his inexplicable love of water-based fetch quests, or it could be his unnerving obsession with forest fairies. Whatever the reason, it wasn't a great shock when Nintendo chose to pass on releasing the utterly bizarre Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland in North America. We Europeans, however, got to experience the game in all its unmitigated oddball glory.

The book is broken up into sections, from lounges and bedrooms to offices and kitchen areas. I also like that the book showcases a variety of styles, so depending on your taste, there’s bound to be a room or two that will inspire you. There is also a couple of resource lists at the back of the book which makes it easy to source materials that you like. The author demonstrates how easy it is to bring flowers into the home and amongst the photos, personal anecdotes and tips are written to give the reader help along the way. There is also a primer at the back of the book which both shows you how to create and maintain floral arrangements, but also useful equipment to help with flower arranging. There are also specific instructions from one of each of the different influences. The French Boudoir and Tropical Rain Forest are particularly lovely. The first part of the book is in chapters covering styles ranging from Classical, City, Modern Country, Country House, Country Home and Cottage. These rooms show the different uses of both paints and wallpapers in various interiors. The second half of the book is about colour – from All White themes to Dark and Beautiful. It shows how colour can open up a room or help create the perfect atmosphere for a bedroom. The book was not only educational, with its history of both paint making and the Farrow & Ball Company. But the rooms were beautiful photographed, which really showed the best use of paint and wallpaper, either in more traditional homes of modern apartments. I now long for a bedroom painted with a ‘Rectory Red’ feature wall and a bathroom in ‘Stone Blue.
