Comcast will test out high-definition video calling on the TV in partnership with Internet-telephony firm Skype, touting the service as a compelling "immersive" application.
With the service, Comcast customers will be able to make and receive Skype video calls from their television to any other Skype user -- on TVs, PCs, compatible smartphones or tablets -- as well as send instant messages while watching TV at the same time.
Comcast said customer trials for the Skype service will begin in the next few months. The company did not announce expected pricing or commercial availability; it said further product details will be made available later this year.
Last month, Microsoft paid $8.5 billion in cash to acquire Luxembourg-based Skype from an investor group led by Silver Lake. Previously Skype was owned by eBay , which bought the company for $2.6 billion in 2005.
For Comcast, Skype on TV promises to be a source of incremental revenue on the telephony front as the growth of its Digital Voice business slows down. Comcast -- the third-largest phone company in the U.S. -- had 8.87 million voice subscribers as of the end of March.
"TV has evolved into a social experience, and Comcast and Skype will be delivering a product that personalizes the TV experience even more, and brings friends and family together through the biggest screen in their homes," Comcast Cable president Neil Smit said in a statement.
Comcast will deliver the service through an adapter box -- which provides an Internet connection the TV -- an HD-quality video camera, and a specially designed remote control with a QWERTY keyboard on the back that lets customers chat via Skype as well as control their television. The other calling party does not need any special equipment beyond what is needed to use Skype.
"I believe we will be able to offer the best video quality for Skype," said Cathy Avgiris, Comcast's senior vice president and general manager of communications a data services. "I think we can provide the best value to customers who buy the triple-play from us."
Comcast has not determined pricing but the Skype kit will be available for a "low monthly fee," Avgiris said, rather than requiring customers to purchase hardware up front.
The Skype service should work with all of Comcast's digital set-top boxes, she added. The only requirement is customers need an HDMI-compatible television that supports 720p for HD calling.
Internet Connection Loading Gmail Account - News
encrypts connections with the e-mail service. Google already changed Gmail to use encryption by default, a mode indicated by the "https" at the beginning of a browser address bar that means outsiders sniffing network traffic can't read your e-mail.

The service will let Comcast customers import friends to their address book from Facebook, Microsoft Outlook, Gmail and smartphone contact lists, as well as find them on Skype and see when they are online and available to talk.

There's also the ever-present question of what happens to all your stuff when you don't have an internet connection. Google promises that it will add offline capabilities to Google Docs and bring it back to Gmail so that you can get some work done on
Q. I use a dial-up Internet connection because for me it's good enough and it's cheap. I've found that the new Google Images search page offers a basic version that loads fewer pictures, which takes less time on dial-up.
Simply put, the cloud allows the storage and retrieval of information from a remote server via a network, rather than an individual PC. The advantages include on-demand network access to information by way of PCs, tablets, smartphones and other
Trying Gmail for mobile application…and it's still loading
The installation went fine. I went to gmail.com/app and I was prompted to download the program. I clicked on download Gmail and the program was downloaded in just a few minutes, at such a cheap GPRS rate at 10 pesos.
I promptly entered my username and password. It was torture doing so using the phone keypad as I use a 30-character password. When I clicked on sign in, the phone screen just displayed loading. I waited for several minutes before exiting the application and opening it again, still no luck.
I tried reentering my username and password, such torture, and signing in again, still no luck. I tried letting it connect for close to an hour, my inbox still wouldn’t load. I could access settings, but these options are programmed into the application, but I couldn’t get my emails.
I tried sending a test email and I got a 502 error, service unavailable. I don’t know where the error lies, whether it is with Gmail or with my Smart connection.
I can connect to Gmail using the m.gmail.com address in my Sony Ericsson K750i but I couldn’t do so using the recently launched application.
The Gmail help center says (emphasis mine):
Why bother when you can connect to your account using m.gmail.com? For one, the Gmail team promises “Speed. Serious speed. Also, the application allows you to search your mails and offers Conversation view, which is what sets Gmail apart from other providers. The application also gives you the look and feel of the product.
Why bother at all to access your emails in your phone, you ask? It can be useful at times when you absolutely need to check your messages or send an email and you don’t have Wi-Fi access and you can’t find a vacant Internet cafe unit.
Has anyone using either a Globe or Smart connection been able to use GMail for mobile application? How were you able to make it work?
We believe Google will eventually release a single app that combined Gmail, Gtalk and GCal. There is another free application called Morange has put all these together, push mail, IM, calendar, virtual disk, Push RSs etc, etc, It is available on GetJar.com, http://www.getjar.com/products/6188/MORANGEFullVersion
So far the users love it and give it high score, May I have the honor to invite you have a look of Morange? and give us some feedback? really appreciate it.
FLURRY java software is quite a good email application for k750i. Opening the YAHOO email inbox costs around 3 kb ~ 50 cents (better than 10/30 min one-time-transaction of smart.). You can also send email. The only reservation i have is the security. The software will ask your email password for them to open for you. Perhaps creating a dummy email account where emails are forwarded is a better remedy.
