You might be better off taking notes with a full-sized laptop."When purchasing a computer, Rohlena usually doesn't advise signing up for trade-in or buy-back programs at retailers such as Best Buy, Radio Shack and Walmart, or even Amazon. Shoppers often have to pay an upfront fee. Consumers can get money back toward their new purchase when they're ready to upgrade to a new computer, but "those programs are generally not going to pay off," Rohlena said.

WALMART MATCHES ADS: Walmart shoppers can get back-to-school savings through the store's ad match policy. According to a release, Walmart will match any local competitor's advertised price for the same product, directly at the register.
BACKPACK DEALS: Through Saturday at Office Depot, get a free backpack and lunch tote with a purchase of $15 or more.
Also through Saturday, Kmart shoppers get a free lunch kit with any backpack purchase, while supplies last. Kohl's has JanSport and Adidas backpacks on sale for $29.99. Yak Pak backpacks are on sale for $19.99.
Through Aug. 21, Belk's entire stock of backpacks is on sale for an extra 20 percent off. Prices will be $15.99 to $39.99.
NOTEBOOKS: Through Saturday, Walmart has notebooks on sale for 20 cents each. Staples has composition books on sale for 10 cents each through Wednesday.
BINDERS: Through Saturday, shoppers can get OfficeMax 1-inch durable standard binders for $1.50 each when they buy four.
MESSAGE BOARDS AND PLANNERS: Through Saturday, Target has 14-inch by 14-inch message boards and planners for $7 each.
