Chemistry between McGhee, wide receivers already apparent
The comfort zone. No, it's not a soft form of pass coverage, but it certainly is a crucial aspect of life. And football.
The more comfortable a person is, the more likely one is to succeed. Look no further than the veteran receiving corps of the Montana State Bobcats. Each projected starter - senior Elvis Akpla, junior Everett Gilbert and sophomore Tanner Bleskin - is eying a season filled with success in no small part because of the comfortable relationship the trio has honed with starting quarterback DeNarius McGhee over the past two years.
Monday morning, at Montana State's fourth day of fall practices, the passing offense was clicking on all cylinders. Akpla continued his stellar camp, running crisp routes to break off defenders with consistency. Gilbert showed glimpses of the shifty style that helped him earn All-Big Sky Conference accolades each of the last two seasons. And Bleskin displayed sure hands on the outside and across the middle.
The one common factor among the three starting wideouts? Their collective comfort with the man throwing them the football.
"Man, (having DeNarius back) puts us light years ahead of where we've ever been," said Akpla, the lone senior in the wide receiver unit. "Even last year, we didn't know who was going to start (during fall camp) and we ended up breaking a whole bunch of records. This year, we know who is going to start. We've been working this summer real hard. The receivers are really well timed up with (McGhee). DeNarius is, people don't really realize, how good he will be."
To say McGhee will be better than he's already been in his short time in blue and gold is saying something. The third-year sophomore led MSU to a share of the Big Sky Conference title and was named the league's Co-Offensive MVP last season. He threw for 3,163 yards and 23 touchdowns in sharing National Freshman of the Year honors with Delaware running back Andrew Pierce.
But McGhee himself said he sees progress in the timing he has with his pass catchers already this fall camp. He attributes it to one thing.
"It's because of our summer workouts," said the native of Euless, Texas. "Everyone was there this summer, everyone was getting a lot of work. Instead of going home and spending time with family - that's a great thing - but instead of doing that, they took time here and stayed and worked with me and that's a great thing. That's the thing that's going to put us on the next level.
