Rations added to the trappings of style and modernity with technological gizmos keeping any eye on the multi-layered security systems to ensure the event was as private an affair as the two families wanted it to be.It was a carefully chosen group of high-profile guests from the world of business, industry, films, politics that blessed the young couple -- Lakshmi Venu, the only daughter of TVS MD Venu Srinivasan and Rohan Murthy, the only son of Infosys founder and now mentor NR Narayana Murthy -- after it tied the nuptial knot at the appointed auspicious hour -- the muhurtham - on Sunday morning. The bride and the bridegroom seemed to enjoy the traditional marriage rituals, according to a guest at the marriage function.
When Rohan Murthy tied the mangalsutra around Lakshmi Venu's neck, she was sitting in her father Srinivasan's lap as is the custom practised by Tamilian Bhramins. It was only natural that Lakshmi was attired in a Kanjeevaram silk saree, also considered a must for marriages in Chennai, the bridegroom sported a dhoti and kurta and the unmistakable Kannadiga turban. In a show of mutual respect, traditions of the Tamilian Brahmin and kannadiga marriage rituals were incorporated in the cross-cultural marriage that attracted huge publicity since the young couple decided to tie the knot after a brief dating in London, where they met sometime in the last couple of years.
Lakshmi, 26, is on the board of TVS Motors headed by her father Srinivasan while Rohan Murthy (28) is doing his post-doctoral studies at the Harvard University.
In Kannadiga as also in Andhrite wedding ceremonies, a dhoti is held as a curtain as a screen between the bride and the bride groom till the auspicious time when the priests allow them to sit side by side for the mangalsutra- ritual wherein the couple sit on the swing and play with small red and yellow coloured rice balls. As per the tradition, the about to be married couple was served milk and bananas ahead of the muhurtham.
"The food was vegetarian and included the best of Tamil and Kannadiga cuisine," said one of the guests who had attended the wedding, which was held on the spacious garden of Lakshmi's maternal grandfather's house where her parents too had got married in 1982.
Since the wedding function was declared a family function, meant only for relatives and special invitees, not open to the media, the house on Radhakrishnan Salai in Central Chennai was made out of bounds by invisible but effective multi-layered security systems.
