27 Mercer Island nonprofits on IRS revoked 501c3 status list
Twenty-six Mercer Island nonprofit (501C3) organizations have had their tax-exempt status revoked by the IRS. A list published by the IRS on June 9, 2011 contains the names of organizations that have had their federal tax-exempt status automatically revoked for failing to file an annual information return or notice with the IRS for three consecutive years.
Over 7,100 such organizations have had their tax-free status revoked in Washington State this past year. The IRS believes the vast majority of these organizations are defunct.

IRS "Freefile" Program | Tax Insights
I’m a CPA and work for a firm where preparing tax returns make up a material part of our revenues. Why would I want to give you information on filing your tax return for free? It’s simple. Many reputable CPAs and their firms don’t want to, and don’t need to, earn their revenues by preparing tax returns that due to a taxpayers individual circumstance, are just plain easy to prepare. After all. Would you go to a brain surgeon for a slight abrasion on your arm? No. You would clean the wound yourself and put a Band-Aid on it right?
CPAs are college graduates with continuing education requirements and have passed what is recognized as one of the most difficult and rigorous professional certification exams and requirements out there. Accordingly they have a lot of time, effort, and money invested in their careers which is reflected in their fees. OK. So now that I’ve tooted my own horn here a bit, if you have an easy tax return this is what you do.
Go to www.irs.gov and click on the “freefile” link. From there you will be provided information to see if you in fact qualify for the free filing. It is specifically designed for those that have easy tax returns. If you go through the steps and find that you don’t qualify for the free filing, then perhaps your tax return is not as easy or uncomplicated as you thought. And that’s not unusual. That is the time to consider getting a professional on your side. Yes you’ll have to absorb the related fees, but don’t be penny wise and pound foolish. CPAs can not only help provide you with a complete and accurate tax return, but we are trained to help you look for ways to save taxes as well.
