The kid and I went to the DMV yesterday morning to trade his Illinois driver's license for a NY one. We go before the woman at the counter and present all we've got: the form, his Illinois license, his social security card and a recent paycheck to prove he lives here. I even made the boy put on a button down shirt and comb his hair for his picture, but it wasn't enough to satisfy the State. No, NYS DMV wants more: they want your original birth certificate, your FBI file and finger prints pasted onto page 7 of an original playbill from the Broadway production of "Fiddler on the Roof". They want your maiden name, your middle name and your High School transcripts. They also wanted, worth only one point for ID purposes, a hand written letter attesting you are who you are from either the Pope, the Dalai Lama, or from Osama Bin Laden himself. To make matters worse he's used variations of his name. Sometimes Richie, sometimes Richard. Sometimes he used his middle initial and other times not. I've used variations of my name too. Most often 'Jeff Green', but my driver's license has my full name on it (with a middle initial), something that shows virtually nowhere else. The IRS seems to have no problem with this and is quite adept at taking my money. My bank and creditors also seem to have no problem. As I go through my wallet I see that I've primarily used three different variations - all me! - and in 50 years have never had a problem nor has anyone ever been confused. First noting that the Legislature must approve all leases, Legislator Dan Birmingham felt that there were two issues with the initial lease that had been granted to the resident: the length of time was unspecified and, more importantly he said, there had been no "consideration" in exchange for the lodging. Birmingham argued that "the county has to get away from residential rental lease - for whatever [any] reason." Supervisor Michael Rights made a last-minute motion at Thursday night's special meeting to suspend and withdraw charges against Ved Parkash, who faces multiple code and zoning violations involving his businesses at 30-38 Old Mine Road, including Parkash Motors Inc., a classic-car dealership. The site was rezoned residential in 2003, town officials said.
