An Artist's Vision: Shiley Eye Center Helps Local Artist Return to his Canvas

DMN Newswire--2011-5-19--      Jerome Walker was born an artist. From the moment he first learned to hold a pencil, Walker began drawing on everything and with everything he could find-including on walls with his sister's lipstick. Despite being visually impaired, he built a career as a painter, showing in galleries in Chicago, London and Paris. Most recently, one of his paintings was recognized by the Regional Juried Show at the San Diego Art Institute. Displayed next to the painting was the artist's dedication: "This painting is gratefully dedicated to Donald and Darlene Shiley and Dr. Weinreb and Dr.Schanzlin Shiley Eye Center in La Jolla, without whose help this painting (and possibly the artist himself) would never have seen the light of day. "
Walker was nearly blind from glaucoma when he arrived at the Center of the UC San Diego Shiley Eye, where he was a patient for over 10 years. Named for the late Donald Shiley and his wife Darlene whose generosity played a key role in the advancement of UC San Diego's ophthalmology department, the Shiley Eye Center provides comprehensive eye care at one location-from basic eye exams to the most advanced diagnostic tests and sophisticated surgery. In the 25 years that the Shiley Eye Center has been operating, Walker is the first and only patient to thank the Shileys for their philanthropy. In a letter addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Shiley, Walker expressed his gratitude for their visionary support which has enabled him to continue his passion for art.
      Walker's impaired vision dates back to his youth. Due to a childhood illness, Walker was blind by the age of nine and underwent extensive treatment that left him with scar tissue over both corneas, severely limiting his vision for the next 37 years.
      "All the years I was growing up, I never saw a blackboard in school," recalls Walker, who grew up in a small town in Illinois. "But I was too shy to tell the teachers. At that age, you don't want to draw attention to yourself."
      Walker continued: "So I would go to the old fashioned hand crank pencil sharpener mounted next to the blackboard, sharpen my pencil slowly and memorize the questions on the board. I would do this over and over until I finished the test. I must have had the shortest, sharpest pencils at Horace Mann School.

An eye disorder damaging the optic nerve and affecting vision is the common problem of glaucoma. It is also characterized by a disease of the major vision nerve beginning with the subtle loss of peripheral vision or side vision. If not treated on time glaucoma can result in blindness. Currently glaucoma is the leading cause of worldwide irreversible blindness. In only US over 4 million people are affected by this disease. This is also more common in Africa.

A problem with having glaucoma is that the person cannot diagnose it at an early stage since it does not have any initial symptoms. Losing side vision goes unnoticed by many. That is why it is also called ‘silent thief of sight’. The damage is realized after a very long period of time and is irreversible. If by any chance the condition is detected at an early stage possible surgical means can slow the progress of glaucoma.

Causes of Glaucoma

Aqueous humor is a clear fluid that fills the front part of the eye. This fluid is made in the back of the eye and leaves through the anterior chamber angle from the front. Blockage or slowing of this fluid will result in immense amount of pressure building up in the eye. This is also called the Intraocular Pressure (IOP). The IOP causes damage to the optic nerve which is the major nerve of the eye. This whole process is called the Ocular hypertension.

Glaucoma can also be caused due to family history of the disease. It can be present in a person by birth. Prolonged usage of steroids can also be a reason for the disease. Other factors like restricted blood supply to the eye, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis or hypertension can also be a cause for glaucoma.

Types and Symptoms of Glaucoma

There are three types of glaucoma experienced by individuals.

Open Angle Glaucoma: this happens without any symptoms when vision begins to lose. This is the most common type. It is painless and results in a progressive visual field loss. Closed Angle Glaucoma: caused by the blockage of aqueous humor fluid. This causes painful pressure in eyes. Immediate medical attention is required. Some dilating eye drops can also trigger this attack. Congenial Glaucoma: this is usually noticed in newborns and related to family history of glaucoma. There is enlargement of one or both eyes, tearing, redness and sensitivity to light.
