Boris Johnson wants Welsh water to 'refresh' the dry southeast of England
London Mayor Boris Johnson has said rainwater from Wales should be used to “refresh the bread basket” of south-east England.
Mr Johnson said moving water supplies from Wales and Scotland to the drier south-east was the “obvious solution” to tackle water shortages in the UK. But water companies are not keen on the idea, and claimed last night that it faced “ecological challenges”.
Mr Johnson, who made his comments in his column for The Daily Telegraph, said the plan was backed by Cardiff University professor Roger Falconer.
Mr Johnson wrote: “The rain it raineth on the just and the unjust, says the Bible, but frankly it raineth a lot more in Scotland and Wales than it doth in England. It has done so throughout the dry spell.
“Since Scotland and Wales are on the whole higher up than England, it is surely time to do the obvious: use the principle of gravity to bring surplus rain from the mountains to irrigate and refresh the bread basket of the country in the south and east.”
His comments recall the memory of the flooding of Tryweryn 46 years ago to supply water to Liverpool. The city officially apologised for the flooding in 2005.
Mr Johnson said he was “amazed” at the hostility water companies showed to the idea, adding that Prof Falconer, an environmental engineer, also thought they were “blinkered and wrong”.
He added: “Prof Falconer has been looking at all sorts of proposals for improving our current network of canals so as to integrate them into the water supply.
“He talks of linking up Welsh mountain reservoirs via the Wye and the Severn with the Thames, or of sending the water from the Severn and the Trent round to East Anglia.”
Mr Johnson said the water companies had warned it would be a mistake to mix up water from Wales with the Thames but said the objections sounded “pretty much like tripe to me”.
He went on: “A canal is a beautiful thing, and if we have to expand the current network with some new stretches, then we should not expect the nimby frenzy you get with a new road.
“The construction of new canals would not only generate jobs to dig the thing, but further jobs in all the recreational activities that would follow.”
Plaid AM for the north region Llyr Huws Gruffydd said: “Some people will be extremely concerned at the suggestion made by the London Mayor, who is looking after his voters in the south-east of England with this scheme. They will undoubtedly benefit from it. What we need to be asking is how do the people of Wales benefit from our natural resources.

The reason for the explosive growth in Morocco as the base for so many European call centres is simple – a progressive government that has made it attractive for businesses to set up shop in Morocco through tax breaks and a reduced phone tariff available only to call centres along with a ready supply of young, educated, and above all native speaking Europeans returning to their ancestral land, even though born and educated in such countries as the UK, France, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Italy, etc.
Why would so many young, well qualified university graduates want to leave their European homes and go to Morocco to work for a lesser salary than they might otherwise receive in their European home country? It's a good question and the answer is simple.
A job. There is a big demand for native (European language) call centre workers in Morocco able to call back to or receive incoming calls from the country in which they were raised. In this context there are many UK citizens who have chosen to move to Morocco. Cost of living. Although the wages paid to a call centre worker in Morocco are much lower than they would get in Europe (were they able to find work) the cost of living is also a lot less. Apartments can be rented cheaply plus both food and transport are less expensive than in Europe. In other words, everything is relative. Climate . Unlike many European countries Morocco enjoys a great climate all year round with beautiful beaches along both the Atlantic and Mediterranean shores.
