The Hindu in the work of MF Husain

ON JUNE 9, 2011, MF Husain breathed his last in a London hospital and was buried in a cemetery there as per his wish that he should be buried at the place of his death. The most celebrated painter of India, more Indian and more Hindu than any of his detractors, died away from home, due to self-imposed exile. This was due to the threats of Hindu fundamentalists. The man many regarded as the Picasso of India had a fate similar to that of Picasso, who went into self-exile in the fascist regime of Franco in Spain.

Husain’s work spanned a long period, evolving with time and deeply rooted in the rich traditions of Hinduism. He was asked why he did not pick Islamic motifs to which he replied that Islam has calligraphy alone and human figures are not drawn in Islamic tradition. He came more into the news from the 1980s with the rise of sectarian politics, after intolerant Hindutva groups started attacking his work regularly. The allegation was that Husain hurt the sensibilities of Hindus, and did it deliberately because he was a Muslim.

He was abused for painting Hindu goddesses like Saraswati, Durga and the one titled Bharat Mata in the nude. Interestingly some of these paintings were done in the 1970s or so. With the rise of the movement for a Ram temple, Hindu fundamentalists became more assertive, intolerance grew, many magazines and newspapers stated writing of hurt sentiments and that’s when the followers of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Bajrang Dal and the Shiv Sena started attacking Husain’s work.

Later, these communal forces filed many cases to harass him. The courts ruled in Husain’s favour saying his paintings did not promote enmity between communities in any way. Husain had grown quite old by then. He was offered state security but he declined to be imprisoned in a cordon of security and decided to take citizenship in Qatar to continue his work in his own uninterrupted way. He maintained that a passport was a piece of paper and that he remained an Indian at heart, but he also missed India. It was a tough choice, to work in an uninterrupted way or to face the wrath of Hindu fundamentalists. Even Muslim fundamentalists didn’t spare him when they objected to his film Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities on the charge that it blasphemed the Koran.
